WordPress Blog: How to set up a Free Blog using WordPress.com: Beginners Guide

WordPress is free to use. It is a Content Management System (CMS), with WordPress, you can easily manage your website pages, content and much more.

There are 2 types of WordPress websites:

  1. The Self-hosted (Not Free)
  2. The WordPress.com websites (Free)

WordPress Self-hosted (Not Free): What you should know

The self-hosted are WordPress website that is hosted on other web hosting companies such as Inmotionhosting, Liquidweb, Hostgator, Bluehost and much more. This selfhosted also consist of your domain and hosting which are not free to use.

However, there are high advantages with the selfhosted website as they tend to perform very well when it comes to ranking on Google and other search engines. Before using the selfhosted service, you must first, think of a good domain you will like to use (www.mydomain.com) before proceeding to purchase a hosting package. Below are some of the recommended hosting providers.

  • Inmotion Hosting
  • Bluehost
  • Hostgator

The above listed hosting companies have been tested by us, however, the most important thing to look out for is their customer service. A good customer service, makes it easy for you, especially when you encounter issues with your server. However, the Free is also a good start for a newbie, then once you have started generating income from your website you can then migrate to a selfhosted WordPress site.

WordPress.com websites (Free): What you should know

The WordPress free blog is also a good way to start, most bloggers started from WordPress and Blogger before migrating to a selfhosted website.

The wordpress.com free websites are hosted on the wordpress.com server, giving you limited privilege to make changes to the core of your website. However, wordpress.com also offers paid version, which gives you access to backup website, access to many themes and premium services.

WordPress.com domains are something like this: www.mydomain.wordpress.com, henry.wordpress.com and so on. All free websites on wordpress.com ends with the .wordpress.com  extension. However, that doesn’t mean the domain can not be changed. The domain can be changed only when you upgrade your WordPress account before you can use something like mydomain.com on a WordPress server.

This type of website is not bad especially when you are just starting up. Before going into blogging, you must think of a nitch and setup your website working towards your nitch and goals.

Setting up a Free WordPress Blog

Since this is your first time to do this, I will try as much as I can to make it extremely easy to understand as Today, you will create your first WordPress blog as long as you follow my guide below.

Requirements to setup your first free blog

  • You need to think of a Good name for your website (techworld.wordpress.com, henry.wordpress.com …)
  • Think of a Nitch. (A nitch are topics you can blog or talk about without getting tired. Example: Tech, Business, Entertainment …)
  • Sure, Internet is a must.
  • No programming skill required

Let’s Setup your Free Blog

With the above set in place, visit WordPress.com and click on Get Started. This will take you to a new page where you will start creating your new website. On the screen, fill every section and click continue.

After clicking continue, it will take you to a page where you will create a link to your website. Refer to the image below.

There are Free domains and paid domain, select the free domain to set up your free website. After that, you will be taken to a page, where you will have to select a plan, since we are creating a free website, go on, scroll down and select “Start with Free“. Now, enter your active Email address, username and password then click continue. The username and password you created will be used to access your new website backend, where you can add a new post, pages, images and much more.

Click continue, your website will be created automatically and you will be taken to your new website. Congratulations, you have successfully set up your new website.

Note: Do not forget to check your email and check for a mail from WordPress.com, open, and click on the link to activate your website account.
